But just how all these divergent plot elements converge to round out an eventual conclusion is a secret privy only to the game’s developers at this point. Or is it?
According to CVG, Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine told PSM3 Magazine that he’s withholding vital story details from his own team. He wants BioShock: Infinite’s developers to react to the plot as it unfolds to them and harness that genuine surprise into the dynamic creation of the first-person shooter.
Levine has proven time and time again to be one of the industry’s most talented and ambitious designers, but his hardline mentality is apparently not sitting well with everyone at Irrational:
Game designers are always conjuring up ways to squeeze the best work out of their team, and Levine’s approach makes for quite an interesting, if not amusing, story. But that’s not to say he doesn’t fervently believe in the work he’s doing. Levine previously discussed the deep writing process of Infinite, also revealing that he kept parts of the plot secret from voice actors until their final cue in the recording studio.
“I’m not going to do that. That’s not the way we present stuff to the gamer… I don’t want to send out a document which is the game story, because to me that’s not the game story - that’s an outline or a blueprint for us to build the game story from.”
Levine’s latest revelation however, is a testament to how exhaustive the creation process of Infinite has been. It’s hard to imagine that the after previewing a spectacular product at E3 2011 and continuing to learn about its varied combat approaches and gameplay mechanics, that even the developers have yet to reach the end of the skyline.
Bioshock: Infinite didn’t land on our most anticipated games list by accident, and we can’t wait for the day we get our hands on it to unravel its secrets. Here’s hoping that the developers at Irrational have a little more patience than we do.
BioShock: Infinite is expected to release in 2012 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
