Morales will slide into the designated hitter role for the defending American League champs after batting .218/.274/.338 in 2014 for the Twins and Mariners. Morales hit just eight home runs and drove in 42 runs in 98 games last season, a substantial drop from 2013 when he belted 23 homers and recorded 80 RBIs.

The deal is worth a reported $17 million over two years with incentives that can vault the contract to $18.5 million.

Morales’ best year came with the Angels in 2009 when he finished fifth in the AL MVP race batting .306/.355/.569 with 34 home runs and 108 RBIs.
